The students with whom we minister look up to us. At times that can be scary because we know all of our faults and sins. At other times it can be fulfilling because we get to pass down our love of Christ to someone else. Think about what you would want your students to emulate of you and then do those things. They will learn more from what you do and how you handle yourself than from what you will say or teach them in a small group. Then remind your students that they are mentors for those younger than them. Have them think about what they want to pass along and have them live those things out. Our faith is a relationship; with God and with others. We pass that faith on through relationships as well. Always have in the back of your head: what do I want to pass along to my students? and then live into that!

Our students take a lot of bumps and bruisers throughout their teenage years. Some of these are physical hurts, but many more of these hurts and pains are emotional. Our students can feel like the world is turning against them or that there is a dark cloud that settles over them and follows them around. The darkness and storms of their life became so loud that all they hear is the negative and the bad. We need to be that voice of hope for our students. We have to continually provide the hope of God to our students. They may only see glimpses of hope in God in the beginning, but those glimpses will cause them to see that it isn’t always dark. We need to remember to be those sweet, small voices of hope.

I once made the mistake of allowing all “Push Notifications” to be sent to my phone. I got constant notifications about the latest of everything, from the latest news to the 75% off discount on flower arrangements through Groupon. The point being that there are constantly people telling us what we need, to the point where we can ask other people to tell us what we need. Our youth are the same way, they want a lot of stuff and many times think they have to have all of that stuff to be who they want to be. We have to be there to remind our students that they only thing they need is their relationship with God. The desires that they have then need to be filtered through that relationship. If we continue to remind our students of that, then their wants will be changed from their wants to what God wants from us.

When your students think about you, what do you think their first thoughts are about you? Are you the person that always has the cool new thing? Are you the person that they see as the rule enforcer? Are you the person that they always want to talk sports with? None of these labels that the students might place on us are bad or wrong, but they can’t be the first label that they put on each of us. Our hope is that our students think of us first as a man or woman of God. What we have to offer to our students is something different than what they can get from other adults outside of the church family. We offer our students Christ first and if we don’t model Christ first in our lives, that won’t be the first thing that they see either.

Our students hear a multitude of voices in their heads. Not in the, they have a psychiatric disorder sort of way, but in the that there are a world of people yelling at them with a variety of messages. The advent of the internet, and then social media, have only increased the speed at which these messages can be heard by the students with whom we minister. You aren’t the only message that the students hear, but if you continue to speak the truth of Christ then you will be the message they continue to return to. This generation of student requires authenticity in their relationships. Remember to be present and honest with your students and to speak the truth of Christ as you are present. We have to live the faith that we preach or our students will see right through it and not even listen to what we say.

Our students bring a lot with them when they come to us. Some of them want to share the troubles that they have, and then there are others that put on the happy face and try to conceal their pain. Our ministries should be places where pains can be brought so that they can be shared and suffered through together. It is through relationships that these pains may be overcome. We see this modeled through the relationship of the Father, Son, and Spirit. They are each individuals but work together as one. May our ministries reflect the relational nature of Trinity as we serve our students.
